about

Welcome back to the ever-evolving landscape of Oval's "Now / Never / Whenever" EP series. Like its predecessors, Vol.4 is again a fleeting exhibit of Oval's creative flair, presenting a curated selection of exclusive material that dissolves into the ether after 24 hours.

Track Comments for Vol.4:

1 - Ontario (2011)
A track that I created for a showcase of my publisher at the time, using the tool set I had just successfully used for “O” (guitar work, “live” drums, faux radio foley). No idea how the “Country-esque” vibe came about, but I guess I just went with it. Revisiting this track revealed that the underpinnings of this era were a ton of MIDI - which makes things a bit complicated today, but might also offer great opportunities for future re-instrumentation.

2 - Rotundette (2020)
From a series of experiments I did on piano themes in the winter of 2020, using a hardware sequencer that I had just bought as a somewhat unlikely addition to my studio: the TORAIZ SQUID, a very “hands-on” dynamic phrase sequencer from Pioneer’s line of DJ products. Now, the resulting piece might not represent the full scope of what this unit can (or cannot) do, but I clearly remember spending a few delightful days with it, as the SQUID has this quirky, “just complex enough”-type workflow that just does it for me.

3 - Büromusik (Cut) (1997)
More historical audio document than composed track, this is one of the few surviving excerpts from an hours-long collaborative concert with Jim O'Rourke and Nicolas Collins in 1997, where each of us was placed "working" in a vacant office of Berlin’s then-newly built, little business-district around Checkpoint Charlie. (My office was the “display office” of that building, street-level with a big shop window. I never saw where my co-workers ended up). So we were playing/recording away and our output was constantly being burned to CD-Rs that were delivered back and forth between our desks by bike couriers, zooming through the still empty streets. The first true ISO 9000-certified concert I ever played.

Experience this month's edition of "Now / Never / Whenever Vol.4", another carefully curated sonic puzzle piece of a larger, ever-evolving momentary museum. A unique, temporary pop-up sound salon, open exclusively for 24 hours.

about

Oval Berlin, Germany

Trailblazing glitch masterpieces (1990s), hyperreal, futuristic post-rock (after 2010), club bangers with a twist (2016) - Oval is a celebration of innovation, skill & sensibility. With an undeniable instinct for the pleasantly irritating, the drastic & the dreamy, M. Popp keeps on pushing the envelope. No one out there plays the computer quite like him.
